Despite the Olympics’ closing ceremonies being in the rearview mirror, the match still had Olympic players absent. The Courage were still missing a few key players, though their starting XI included both Brazil’s Debinha and New Zealand/Courage captain, Abby Erceg. The US Women National Team (USWNT) players Sam Mewis and Lynn Williams were not in the lineup, nor present in Cary, N.C. for Sunday’s match.
First Goals
Amy Rodriguez notched her first goal in Courage blue, scoring on a penalty kick after the Red Stars were called for a handball in the box. The goal ended up being the only one of the night for either side.
Looking Forward
The North Carolina Courage will be at home again on Saturday, August 21, 2021, for the second of three 2021 regular-season matches against Kansas City. That match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm ET start and will be the first time Kristen Hamilton, Hailie Mace, and Katelyn Rowland return to Sahlen’s Stadium since being traded for Amy Rodriguez in July.
