Last Saturday night’s matchup against the expansion team, Kansas City represented the first time former Courage players Kristen Hamilton, Hailie Mace, and Katelyn Rowland returned to Cary, North Carolina since last month’s trade. All three players started for KC. Hamilton and Rowland played the entire match.
It also was the first time post-Olympics for Lynn Williams to return to competing for her club.
Williams made sure to show she was back on the pitch for the Courage early. In the 12th minute, Williams received a ball from Carson Pickett, scored with her right foot to the lower corner of the net, for the first of four goals against former Courage keeper, Katelyn Rowland.
Forward Jess McDonald scored 9 minutes later, notching her 50th NWSL regular-season goal. Pickett also recorded her second assist of the evening on the play.
Following half-time, Amy Rodriguez got her second goal as a Courage player from an assist with pace from Ryan Williams.
Havana Solaun was charged with two yellow cards, resulting in a red card disqualification in the 75th minute.
Despite playing with 10 players, in the 90th minute Meredith Speck scored on the far post after a Taylor Smith deflection, marking the 4-0 final score at home for the Courage.
The Courage and KC will play again in Kansas City on Sunday, September 5, 2021 at 7:00 pm ET. It marks the third and likely last meeting for the two teams in 2021.
The Courage will be on the road this weekend against the Washington Spirit for the second of three 2021 regular-season matches against Washington. That match is scheduled for a 5:00 pm ET start on Sunday, August 29, 2021.
