In a press release put out this afternoon, the North Carolina Courage announced their 26-player regular season roster for the start of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.
Out of the 26 players under contract, 24 will be active heading into their first match week of the season. The Courage have two empty spots on their active roster, meaning there may be moves and invitations to fill those vacant spots.
Midfielder Emily Gray, the third overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, suffered a torn ACL during preseason. Gray will miss the 2023 season completely and has been placed on the Season-Ending Injury list. Additionally, forward Tess Boade, who suffered a shoulder injury while on loan in Australia over the off-season, begins the year on the 45-day Injured Reserve.
Roster Continuations from 2022
Of the 24 filled active roster spots, 17 players were with the Courage in 2022. Nine 2023 roster spots are occupied by new players to the Cary, NC-based club. All four 2023 NWSL Draft selections are under contract. The Courage are utilizing five international spots, going into the 2023 campaign.
