Via a statement posted on the NWSL website, it’s been announced that all NWSL matches will not be played this weekend.
In light of the allegations and subsequent firing of North Carolina Courage head coach, Paul Riley, the shock, pain, and anger players, staff, and fans are feeling, the games this weekend are not being played.
On their site, the NWSL made the following statement:
“The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that given the gravity of the events of the last week, matches scheduled for this weekend will not occur.
NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said, ‘This week, and much of this season, has been incredibly traumatic for our players and staff, and I take full responsibility for the role I have played. I am so sorry for the pain so many are feeling. Recognizing that trauma, we have decided not to take the field this weekend to give everyone some space to reflect. Business as usual isn’t our concern right now. Our entire league has a great deal of healing to do, and our players deserve so much better. We have made this decision in collaboration with our players association and this pause will be the first step as we collectively work to transform the culture of this league, something that is long overdue.'”
There’s been no word if these games will be rescheduled, and if so when.
The following games will not happen this first weekend in October 2021:
October 1, 2021
Washington Spirit at North Carolina Courage
October 2, 2021
NJ/NY Gotham FC at Racing Louisville FC
October 3, 2021
Orlando Pride at Chicago Red Stars
Houston Dash at Kansas City
OL Reign at Portland Thorns FC
Three games are also scheduled for mid-week on Wednesday, October 6 — Washington Spirit at NJ/NY Gotham FC, Racing Louisville FC at North Carolina Courage, and Houston Dash at Portland Thorns FC. No word has been given on whether those games too will be canceled.
Update: In an email sent out to subscribers and ticket holders on Friday afternoon, the North Carolina Football Club / NC Courage said the following:
“In accordance with the NWSL, tonight’s contest with the Washington Spirit will not be played as scheduled. Tickets to tonight’s match will be honored at a later date. More details will be released next week.
Thank you for your continued support and patience during this time.”
